29. October: Berlintwitterwall.com blocked in China

The website berlintwitterwall.com, which has been launched by Kulturprojekte Berlin within the festivities of the anniversary "20 Years since the Fall of the Wall" in Berlin, is not freely accessible anymore in China since Monday evening, Beijing time.

The website had been launched on October 20th, 2009. On it, users of the micro-blogging-service Twitter can leave their thoughts and messages on the Fall of the Wall and give their opinion, which walls still have to come down in the rest of the world. The blocking of the site has been confirmed by various current sources. Via the initiative's twitter account (http://twitter.com/fallofthewall) historical facts about the peaceful revolution and the Fall of the Wall are posted, as well as daily news of the project.

Past Friday, only three days after the launch of the site, Chinese twitter-users had started to use the site to protest against the internet-censorship in their own country. Since then, more than 3,000 comments have been posted, about half of them in Chinese.

For that reason, all info texts about the project on berlintwitterwall.com itself will also be available in Chinese from tomorrow. Moreover, historical tweets about the peaceful revolution, already being posted on the site in English and German, will now be posted in Chinese as well.
